Being a leader today is a tough job. This is especially true if this is the first time you have stepped up as a leader or manager. However, a leadership role is something to be proud of. It is an accomplishment that few too many people experience in life. If you have just begun your new leadership role or management position, here are some things to remember that can help you to be more successful.
Just because you’re a manager doesn’t mean you’ll be respected.
It’s safe to say that people will recognize you as a manager. They will likely talk behind your back and will be standoffish around you too. You are no longer part of the team, but rather the head of the pack. There will be those who will push your boundaries and test you. Don’t expect people to respect you without giving respect in return. A little goes a long way.
You cannot change the company or the world.
I can be thrilling to think of all the ways that you would like to make changes within your company now that you are a manager. But hold on! Things are the way they are in your company because of a long history of leaders that have come before you. You cannot change things overnight. If you want to see any positive changes within your organization and you believe your management skills are up to the task, start listening to your subordinates, get their suggestions, and start making minor changes within your team first.
The best managers do not bark orders, they coach people.
There are two kinds of managers. One is the old-fashioned manager who sits behind a desk yelling orders at everyone and keeping employees in fear. The other type is a manager who brings out the best in his or her people by coaching them. You want to be like the second type of manager if you want to last in this job. Coaching managers look for the best qualities and strengths in their people and then develop them over time. This makes for a strong team and for a stronger company.
