When you’re out of work and a little unsure of your career future, it can be very tempting to take just about any job that comes along. This is particularly true of those who are new to the workforce or who have been out of the job market for a little while. However, this is a bad career move. There are some compelling reasons why you should not just take any job you’re offered. Doing so can damage your chances of being available and in the right place for the best career opportunity when it finally comes along.

Hold fast to your career goals! Here are some reasons why you have choices when it comes to your career, and you don’t have to take just any job is offered to you.

Just because you are out of work doesn’t mean you are not a valuable candidate.

There seems to be a negative attitude about candidates who are currently unemployed or in between jobs. This is a stigma that has gone on far too long. The reality is, there are many recruiters and hiring managers looking for candidates who can start work right away. There are also many candidates who are very skilled and very valuable in the market he just has not landed upon the right job yet. If you take any job, you look desperate and this is a red flag for recruiters. Do not devalue yourself by taking a less-than-adequate job at this time.

Sure, you need to earn a living, but not at the cost of your self-esteem.

Every job seeker feels a little panicky at some point over finances, but this does not mean that you have to let your self-esteem suffer by taking on a job that is far below your abilities. In fact, during the interim you could take on some temporary assignments in your area of expertise, or try a new job that challenges you to grow your skills. This is not to say that you should allow pride to get in the way or end up homeless because you cannot pay your bills. Take advantage of any services and support you can get at this time, including unemployment insurance and workforce education if you are eligible. Just don’t tear yourself down because you are out of work right now.

If you settle on any job, you won’t have time to interview.

There’s another good reason not to take just any job right now while you’re looking for the right career. Consider this: You may not have enough time to interview for a better job if you take a low-paying, time-sucking, full-time job right now. This could also seriously hamper your ability to consider a transfer to another region where you may be offered a very generous salary for your skills. Right now, don’t make any big decisions. Be open to the possibilities that your career has in store for you.
