As the New Year gets underway, there will be no shortage of career tips that will be published on popular blogs and websites. It can be confusing to know what advice to follow when it comes to creating a dream career. But there are also some career truths that can apply to you whether you are currently employed, working a temporary job, or are ready to switch careers. Read on to get your career tips that can help 2016 be your best year ever.

1. Increase your knowledge base.

In order to remain valuable and competitive at work, it’s up to you to stay knowledgeable about the kind of work you do. This includes technology updates, industry knowledge, and key learning that you experience on the job. Make it a point to evaluate whether a certification will help you advance in your career, and if you need additional training in a certain area of your career that will help you remain marketable.

2. Where you work matters.

In a competitive job market, it’s important to think about where you work, and whether or not the company represents the best in the industry. If you are in a small company, it could be a good idea to start thinking about moving up into a mid-to-larger-size company that has a good reputation. You could be limiting yourself by staying where you are, including your earnings and the types of future projects that you are capable of handling.

3. Are you busy or productive?

Take a look at your work habits for a moment. Are you the type who normally has a great deal of busy work, or do you tend to look busy because you are either (1) not managing your time well or (2) you don’t want to look bored enough to get assigned more work? Evaluate where you are now and where you want to be a year from now. Being busy doesn’t mean you are productive, and being productive is something your boss will notice.

4. Execution of tasks is critical.

One of the career mistakes many people make is being unwilling to come up with better ways of doing things. Standing out and making changes can be scary, so it can seem safer to just follow the regular way of handling tasks and work projects. Uncover better and more efficient ways of executing tasks that make your work more meaningful this year.
