The job market is continually changing to meet the needs of businesses worldwide. However, as an executive level job seeker, it can be challenging to keep up. If you’ve been out of the loop for even a year or so, the ways in which you look for new career opportunities are different now. It’s time to revamp your job search, by tapping into the resources and methods available to you.

What’s different about the job market today?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s most recent Employment Projections for 2010-2020, there is expected to be an increase in the number of self-employed, solo entrepreneur, and industry-expert consultant opportunities in the coming decade.

Experts have also predicted approximately 65 million new roles that will not fit into the traditional job sector, almost 40 percent of the workforce will consist of independent contractors and temporary workers through 2020. That means there will be less and less 9-5 jobs in the corporate sector, and more careers that will provide special support and services to many of the top growing industries instead.

How can I prepare for these market changes?

As a seasoned professional in your industry, you are actually at an advantage. However, that doesn’t mean a job will automatically come to you. You will have to work just as hard as others to be in demand with potential employers. Here are some ways to get prepared now.

Establish your own brand. To stand out from the competition, and it will be fierce, you will want to develop a professional brand for yourself. Just as the biggest and more notable companies do, you need an image. To do this, create a portfolio website and social networks that are consistent to what your areas of expertise are.

Get connected with networking. Once you have established your brand, it’s time to proactively connect with others in your field so you can share your knowledge and become a thought leader. Do this using business and social networking groups and community activities.

Be a lifelong learner. To stay ahead of others, you must constantly be learning new things. Keep in touch and stay up to date on the news in your industry. Get certifications and take continuing education classes. Keep learning and sharing information with others.

Partner with an industry staffing agency. While you are looking for a great career opportunity, you can keep your job skills up to date by taking contract assignments. You’ll be in a better position when a job offer comes in, and you’ll make new contacts. TempStaff is a great place to start! Staffing Agencies in Jackson, MS.
