People who have failed throughout their career can attest to the fact that it helped them immensely moving forward. Failure is a common part of a career and should almost be expected. Not everyone will get it right the first time, or succeed the minute they are handed their diploma. Failure can actually be a great mentor for your career. Keep the following tips in mind the next time failure peaks its head into your career:

Quiet the Skeptics

Find a way to quiet the skeptics as much as possible. This will ensure that you are happy during your career. No one else can tell you if you are good enough or ready for certain parts of a job. The only person who can tell you this is yourself. You can quiet the skeptics by taking your time and putting in the hard work required to become successful. Always be grateful and accepting of those who believe in you, but do not expect it. If you begin to expect it, you will come across disappointment.

Don’t Live in the Past

Refrain from living in the past. When you live or dwell in the past, your future will suffer. People who live or dwell in the past tend to be afraid of the future and disappointed in what is happening right now in their career. Even if what happened to you in the past was traumatic or really disheartening, you must get past it and only focus on the here and now so your future does not suffer.

Work Outside Your Comfort Zone

Many times during your career you will have to step up and step out of your comfort zone. A major career killer or reason for it stalling can be peace of mind. The more you work in your comfort zone, the more likely it is that you will have trouble moving forward. The ability to step out of your comfort zone can really help your career and teach you how to succeed.

Be Patient, Be Persistent

Do your best to be patient, but also persistent at the same time. You do not want to be so patient that you settle into a dead-end job for the rest of your career. But, you should also be persistent. If you fail, try again. Try a different way. Or re-work your project completely so you do not fail again. Persistence will reward you eventually.

The next time you fail at a project or a job, remember that you can learn from it and turn the failure into success down the road.

One of the reasons why people find job searching so dull is because it often means spending hours conducting solitary tasks. It can also be a frustratingly long process. To help make the job search process more positive, connect with a group of other job seekers on a social network, or head out for a local networking group. Get the emotional support you need to move past any negative feelings.

Step 4 – Keep your skills and options open with temp assignments

While you are actively seeking a great job, it’s always easier to get hired if you are currently working. Why? Employers are often most interested in people who are employed than those who are not working or volunteering, because it shows initiative. Take on a few temporary assignments to keep your skills fresh and your head in the game.

As we move forward with technology, our job search options must move forward as well. What may have worked for you 15 years ago will get you little response today. There are countless job search techniques available to anyone. If you forget about what worked yesterday and focus on today, you’ll be much more successful. The jobs are out there. Applying Solely Online for Jobs

Applying for jobs online is quickly becoming outdated. It’s a hard concept for many to accept. The problem is that so many people go online to apply for jobs that you end up getting lost in a sea with hundreds of other faceless people. The only thing the employers have to look at is the application itself.  In order to stand out and get ahead, figure out who does the hiring at this company and send them an email or make a quick phone call. You need to remain professional but stand out at the same time.

Quantity vs. Quality Job Search Techniques

An old school of thought- send out dozens of applications and someone will eventually bite. However, all this does is force you to send out more than a few mediocre applications to dozens of companies you know nothing about. Instead, focus on just a handful of jobs that you really want, and then research. Write cover letters and make resumes that are relevant and specific to the companies you are applying for. The quality of one resume to one employer goes a lot further than dozens of so-so resumes to dozens of employers. Write a different cover letter for every company you apply for. Simply swapping out a few words to try to customize it is not enough. Including company specific information in each cover letter shows the potential employer that you did your homework. The attention to detail this early on leaves a great impression and increases your odds of getting an interview.

Applying for a job used to entail talk of you and nothing else. You would tell them about your strengths and weaknesses, your goals, your hobbies and what you can bring. Assuming that no one hires around the holidays is a long time assumption that can leave you without a job. Many people wait until January to begin searching for work. If you do this too you’ll be just a nameless face in a sea of other job hunters. When you keep your search going through December you are putting yourself ahead of everybody else. Hiring managers will have more time to pour over resumes during the holidays as their workloads slow down.
