Interview Tips
First impressions DO matter! That first interview is vitally important. The impression you make on the interviewer can mean getting the job or not. While your skills are extremely important, there are many other factors that employers look at when considering a candidate. We have compiled the following list of tips that you should always follow when going on an interview.
1. Arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment
2. Don't bring a spouse, boy/girlfriend, child or friend to an interview.
3. Be Prepared! Have an extra copy of your resume with you. Make sure there are no errors on your resume. Ask your consultant to proof it for you.
4. Fill out applications completely. Don't put "See Resume." Be sure dates are exact and correct.
5. Bring a notepad with you to write down questions you might think of before you forget them. Also, write down the names of everyone you speak to.
6. Sit up straight in your interview.
7. Wear a conservative, tailored business suit or dress.
8. Keep your makeup light. No overly bright colors or heavy eyeliner. No heavy perfume.
9. Have your hands nicely manicured.
10. Wear natural colored hose. Patterned hose are inappropriate.
11. Keep jewelry to a minimum.
12. Don't chew gum or smoke.
13. Look your prospective employer in the eyes while you speak.
14. Ask intelligent questions about the company. This shows your interest in the company. A great source for information is the Internet.
15. Don't talk about irrelevant topics or your personal, domestic, or financial problems.
16. Hold up your end of the conversation. Remember, you are selling yourself. Don't use many "yes" or "no" answers, but don't go on and on with a response.
17. Don't display negative or indifferent attitudes.
18. Don't criticize former employers or coworkers from previous or present jobs and situations.
19. Don't bring up last things first such as salary, hours, benefits, etc.
20. Close the interview with a pleasant "Thank you." Don't make the interviewer have to throw you out.
21. Don't flatly refuse a position, even if you don't want it. You may change your mind later.
22. Follow up your interview with a thank you letter immediately.
23. Don't be discouraged if you don't get the first one or two jobs you interview for. Your interviewing technique will improve with practice.
