Recruiting in today’s marketplace can be quite a challenge. It’s difficult to find a few standout candidates in what seems to be a never-ending sea of candidates. Many of these candidates appear perfectly qualified for the position on paper.

So, how do you mow through the giant stacks of applicants in order to find the truly spectacular applicants who are sure to be an excellent addition for your business? One way, is to recruit for specific skills rather than a particular amount of education and/or experience. Here are a few critical skills you might want to consider looking for the next time you’re hiring.

Flexibility

Today’s workers can’t be rigidly locked into roles or expectations. If we’ve learned anything in the past four years, it’s that. Employees need to be willing to take on new tasks, responsibilities, and leadership positions within the company when the need arises.

The ability to be flexible in their response to their positions, reassessments of their positions, and to the needs of the business world at large is a critical skill that all companies and business types need to look for in new hires.

Passion

This is one thing that just can’t be faked. You might not always be able to see it on the resume, some people are better at expressing themselves face-to-face, but it is something you should look for during the interview process.

The more passionate your employees are about the job, the product, and the differences they’re making, the greater the odds are that they’ll work tirelessly for you and your business. It’s a win-win situation for you and the employee. You’re both very likely to find the partnership quite rewarding.

Thrift

While you don’t want to employ the next Ebenezer Scrooge, you should also take care that you go out of your way to find employees who understand the need for thrift or frugality in their roles within your organization. Businesses today simply can’t afford wasteful spending. They’re already cutting things close just to make ends meet and remain in business (much less maintain a profit margin of any measure).

Ask the candidates what they’d do to cut costs within the company and how they as individual employees can help keep expenses down while still managing to boost profits. It’s a thoughtful question that will provide extremely revealing responses. What you’re looking for is answers that provide realistic solutions that can be successful.

When you find the right sets of skills in your job candidates you’ll find that filling the positions you have available is easier than it’s ever been before. Just remember that some things, in the real world of business, can be far more important than the number of years someone has worked in a position or studied to do the work in question.
